Katriona peered closer. Then she stood up and drew back, and turned on the man who had spoken, smoothing her sleeves. “The hair isn’t hers. Neither are the eyes. She doesn’t have brown hair like mine or blue eyes like mine because she was my maid.”

“All right, but how do you know this?”

“I’ve seen her hands, for starters. That little brown spot on the right index finger. Two freckles under her right eye, my right, one almost big enough to be a mole. The structure of her face, too. And she always wore that bracelet with the little glass beads—” She broke off, swallowing a sob. “My own maid, Helena!”

“Will you be all right, Miss Sparrow?”

“I’ve never saw someone I knew dead before. It’s a bit disconcerting, I find.”

“Will you still—”

“Yes, of course. More than ever, I must know how she died.”
